A case study example of how Theratrak can support a child to improve their handwriting skills by supporting them with their home therapy program.
Setting up a home therapy program for therapists shouldn’t feel like assembling IKEA furniture without the instructions.
But for many allied health therapists, creating personalised and motivating home programs (and tracking if their activities are actually getting done) can easily become the focus of your full-time job.
Enter Theratrak: the digital tool designed to make therapy easier for clinicians and participants, without drowning in paperwork, text messages, or guesswork.
Let’s meet Sam - and see how Theratrak helped turn his handwriting struggles into home therapy progress.
Meet Sam: Our Occupational Therapy Participant 🏃
Sam is 6 years old and loves soccer, and is currently attending kindergarten.
Sam’s teacher referred him to occupational therapy for extra support with his writing skills - noticing challenges with visual tracking, pencil grasp, and midline crossing.
In therapy sessions, Sam’s Occupational Therapist quickly discovered two things:
Sam had trouble keeping his pencil under control on the page.
Sam also had a serious need for speed!
The solution? A racing car handwriting game.
Sam traced a figure 8 track pretending his pencil was a race car zooming around corners. Instant engagement as Sam found this super fun.
"Sam’s handwriting homework? Officially faster and more controlled than his Hot Wheels collection."
Sam’s Therapy Goals 🎯
To kick off their sessions together, Sam’s Occupational Therapist broke down Sam’s key therapy goals:
Visual Tracking: Improve eye-hand coordination while writing.
Midline Crossing: Build coordination across both sides of the body.
Letter Formation: Master consistent, legible letter shapes.
Pencil Grasp: Strengthen fine motor skills for better control.
These goals were then recorded within Theratrak.
The Home Program Challenge 🧠
Like many young kids, Sam needed practice outside therapy to really make gains. But motivating him (and keeping track of his practice) was a different story.
One day, he zipped through his letters like a champ. The next, he raced his pencil straight off the page.
Sam’s Occupational Therapist knew that easy access, fun reminders, and real feedback would be crucial to keeping him on track.
How Theratrak Helped Sam - and Sam’s OT! 📲
Thanks to Theratrak, creating and prescribing Sam’s home program took less than five minutes during their sessions together - no stack of sticky notes required.
Here’s how Theratrak works for Sam’s Occupational Therapy sessions:
Custom Activity Uploads: Sam’s OT filmed a quick video of the figure 8 race track game, complete with verbal instructions for Sam’s parents. The video was then uploaded straight into Theratrak as a custom activity Sam and his parents could watch anytime home.
Personalised Activity Selection: The OT built a full home program - including letter families practice - using Theratrak’s preloaded activities plus their custom uploads.
Custom Notifications: Set up fun reminder notifications at times that suited Sam’s home schedule, nudging him to practice without the usual resistance.
Progress Feedback via Journal Feature: Sam’s mum used Theratrak’s journal feature to send quick note and video updates after each practice session at home so the therapist can view how he’s performing these tasks at home.
“Went really well today!”
“Tough session, he lost focus halfway through."
This allowed Sam’s OT to adjust strategies week-to-week - coming prepared with new fun games when motivation dipped.
All without endless emails, lost paper handouts, or last-minute session chaos.
From Concern to Completion 🚀
In just a few weeks of completing his home therapy program via Theratrak, Sam:
Improved his pencil control and letter formation.
Increased his confidence in writing tasks at school.
Stayed more consistently engaged with his home activities.
Meanwhile, Sam’s Occupational Therapist:
Spent less time setting up programs.
Received better, faster feedback from home.
Had more time to plan fun, meaningful in-session activities.
And this all started with a home program that took less than five minutes to create!
